1200+ High Schoolers to Participate in Innovative Problem Solving Program

The Illinois Science and Technology Institute (ISTI) announces the expansion of its Research & Development (R&D) STEM Learning Exchange. Now in its third year, this trailblazing, public-private effort connects students to future STEM careers. This school year, through STEM Challenges and the Mentor Matching Engine (MME), the R&D STEM Learning Exchange will reach more than 1,200 students at 29 Illinois high schools.

Today the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition (ISTC), a not-for-profit organization focused on growing the state’s innovation economy, is announcing the fourth class of corporate participants in its Corporate-Startup Challenge, an award-winning matchmaking program that connects global corporations with startups and emerging technology firms across the state. This group includes Illinois-based Fortune 500 companies Allstate Corporation (participating in the program for a second time), Caterpillar Inc. and Grainger.

What happens when 600 innovative students come together in one room? STEM challenges get solved! Students from 17 Illinois high schools were tasked by the Illinois Science & Technology Institute (ISTI; www.istcoalition.org) to solve real-world problems in partnership with nine industry and academic partners. The goal: to get them excited about research and development (R&D) and inspire them into careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Their efforts culminate in the Second Annual R&D STEM

Joined by industry, research, and civic leaders from across Illinois, Governor Bruce Rauner today proclaimed April 29 as “Innovation Day” in Illinois during a leadership breakfast at the Governor’s Mansion. The theme of this year’s event is Regional Prosperity through Innovation, emphasizing ways innovative technologies drive new products, companies, and jobs in key Illinois industries, including advanced manufacturing, information technology, clean tech, healthcare, and agribusiness. The event was organized by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition (ISTC), and cohosted by Clean Energy Trust (CET), Illinois Manufacturers’ Association (IMA), and Illinois Technology Association (ITA).
