Welcome to the August 2009 edition of ISTC Catalyst, a
monthly publication featuring developments of note for the science
and technology community in Illinois and the Midwest. This
month we shine a spotlight on the state's diverse offerings in
nanotechnology, from research & development activities to
commercialization.
Illinois is a leader in nanotechnology, and through continued
collaboration great things are achievable. Small Times, a
respected national magazine covering the nanotechnology industry,
traced Illinois' strength in nanotechnology to its numerous
research centers and laboratories, making Illinois an "unparalleled
multi-disciplinary environment for cutting-edge basic and
translational research." This leadership will be on display next
month when the NanoBusiness Conference is held in Chicago, for the
first time.
Nanotechnology has the potential to impact every sector of our
economy and nano-enabled products are projected to be a $2.6
trillion global industry by 2014, increasing from $60 billion in
manufactured goods in 2008 (The Guardian).
The organizations referenced in ISTC Catalyst are but a few of the
academic, industrial and public sector nanotechnology leaders in
Illinois. Their work and dedication is illustrative of the
promising nanotechnology-based activity occurring daily in the
Midwest.

Thinking Small for Big
Results
By U.S. Representative Daniel Lipinski (IL-03)
In one promising economic sector, it is essential for Illinois to
think small. The field of nanotechnology - manufacturing
based on manipulating individual atoms and molecules - could lead
to revolutionary new products, and has the potential to transform
many of our existing industries, from computers to communications
to medical science. Thinking small has the potential to generate
very big results for our state's economy.

Dear ISTC Catalyst visitor:
I am excited to share with you that after seven years in New
York, Chicago will soon host the 8th Annual
NanoBusiness Conference - the United States' premier
nanotechnology industry conference. I hope you will join us
at McCormick Place West from September 8-10, 2009.
This year's conference focuses on revitalizing the economy
through nanotechnology innovation, and Chicago is a natural choice
to hold the 2009 conference. From our state's large
manufacturing base to world-class nanoscience researchers, Illinois
is home to a vibrant and growing community of nanotechnology
innovators.
The conference provides a uniquely efficient and effective forum
for those of you looking to access nanotech innovations for your
industrial businesses. The NanoBusiness Conference draws
innovative nanotechnology companies from across the country who are
commercializing horizontal, platform technologies and who are
looking to form partnerships to bring the innovations to
market.
Our team is happy to help you make the right connections at the
conference - it creates value for you and for our member
companies. If you decide to attend, please send me an email and let me
know what technologies and applications are of most interest to
you. We will then connect you to the start-up companies that
best fit you interests. Please visit our registration
page to learn more about the conference.
Sincerely,
Sean Murdock, Executive Chairman
NanoBusiness Alliance
Join
Kodak CTO Terry Taber, Baxter CSO Norbert Riedel, Lux Capital
Co-founder Josh Wolfe, Lockheed Martin CTO Ray Johnson and other
business & science leaders at NanoBusiness Conference
2009.
